L'Association ontarienne des Sourd(e)s francophones donne son appui. Ceci est déjà disponible en français à Ottawa et à Sudbury. Il devrait avoir plus de sous titrage en français dans tout les cinémas de la province. Merci Roger St-Louis, Président

RE: Open Captioned movies

Hi Lori, Do you know if there will be any open captioned movies that would be suitable for Deaf/HH students? I would appreciate any information from you as we are looking to organize a Social Movie/Pizza outing for our D/HH students from grades 7 to 12.

Thanks,

Jarhead at Rainbow Cinema

I was at the open captioned movie Jarhead today. I loved it! I sincerely hope that all movies will become open captioned in the NEAR future.

I am a hearing person who goes to movies often. With a Deaf partner, I usually have to go alone. My boyfriend will only go to movies he wants to see. And unfortunately those aren't always the movies being Rear Window Captioned. Boo hoo.

Please give a round of thanks to all the people of CMNC and to Rainbow Cinemas for being the first to show an open captioned movie.

As a hearing person, I didn't find the captions bothersome at all. Congratulations!

Open Letter to Tim Smy, Rainbow Cinemas

I just wanted to thank-you again for the wonderful experience so many of us enjoyed today viewing our first open captioned movie! I can't tell you what a thrill it was to see a movie, and actually be able to follow all the dialogue. I personally feel open captioning is far preferable to the rear window captioning I have seen so far.

It was an exciting afternoon and we truly applaud Rainbow Cinemas for their leadership and initiative.

Thank-you also for allowing us to say a few words before the movie started. I hope this will continue to be a positive experience for all. I am interested in the feedback from the movie goers. It would be especially wonderful if we were to learn that hearing people didn't find the captioning distracting!

I salute Rainbow Cinemas for their leadership in making movie going accessible for the Deaf, deafened, and hard of hearing.

With Best Regards,

Lori Archer

Hi Everyone,

My name is Maggie Berze. I am from Windsor, Ontario. Member of Windsor Association of the Deaf.

I am giving you my experience with the movie.

I became Deaf at the age of 18 months.

When I see many people talk about new rear window caption for the Movies, I knew it was not good idea to have rear window captions. I decide to go to the movie to try and test how it works for me.

At first time all the seats were all full upstairs. I didn't know how to use the rear window caption. I was sitting front row of the movie. WOW!! It was hard to get the captions working. I kept being patient all through movie show.

I went to May Fest and talked to person who is advertising new rear window captions. I told the person that I didn’t feel comfortable using rear window caption. It was not being proper to use. Really bothering my eyes and making me feel uncomfortable in my seat.

Person suggested me try sit upstairs to get the words closer to my rear window. I decide go back again other time. It was pretty good get closer. But still not feeling comfortable for being visible and using my drink holder. Where would I put my own drink? Later on my window bend down to me. I had to fix it, interrupting the movie show time. I was trying to fix the window. It was turned the wrong way. The window had fell off and go over to other person. I was very embarrassed and said sorry to person. The person loved away from me.

It was a frustrating experience for me with rear window captioning.

Later on, I received an e-mail from my friends in Michigan. They recommended to me popular movies with OPEN CAPTION.

My first movie that I watched with open captioning was STAR WAR III. WOW!! It is very fantastic and more comfortable than rear window caption. I was relaxed and watched the whole movie. More comfortable and no more bothering my visibility.

When I see this e-mail trying OPEN CAPTION movie in Toronto. I wish to come and try. I am telling you that I already tried OPEN CAPTION in Michigan. I really love it a lot. HOPE WE WILL GET OPEN CAPTION SOON for our movies.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU to get our rights for movies with OPEN CAPTIONS.

Thank you for sending me all the information. I am pleased for the Information and I am supporting all of you. You can tell them about my experiences.

Margaret Berze
